A coalition of over 70 organizations, including the ACLU, EPIC, and Fight for the Future, has cautioned Meta about the potential dangers of its upcoming AI smart glasses. These groups assert that the glasses’ facial recognition capabilities could be exploited to target and endanger abuse victims, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The organizations voiced their concerns in a joint statement, highlighting the risk that these advanced glasses could be misused by sexual predators and others seeking to cause harm. They emphasized that the ability to identify individuals through facial recognition technology could create new avenues for abuse and discrimination.
The groups urged Meta to reconsider incorporating facial recognition into its smart glasses, advocating for alternative technologies that prioritize user privacy and safety. They argued that the potential benefits of facial recognition do not outweigh the significant risks to vulnerable populations.
